Overview
Pathway Intensive English is a crash course in English for students wishing to get a head start. After the summer, you will be using English more confidently and will be well equiped to take on academic studies.
The programme is tailored for students with an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or equivalent (see requirements) who wish to improve their English proficiency and become eligible for university studies in Sweden. Choose this Pathway to support your career and future employability.
Pathway Intensive English consists of a single English language course. Still, students can also expect to learn and develop university academic skills alongside language activities. Knowledge will be gained through lectures, group discussions, assignments, workshops, and excursions.

After the programme
Upon completion of the programme you will have received:
- direct entry to a degree programme at Jönköping University
- the English language level in reading, writing, listening and speaking necessary for enrollment in degree programmes at Jönköping University
- support in adjusting to the demands, challenges and expectations of Swedish higher education
- acclimatization to Swedish culture making it easier to live and study in Sweden
In addition at the end of the pathway programme, you will receive a certificate of completion demonstrating skills equivalent to the Swedish high school course English 6. Course Contents
The course prepares students by building English proficiency for university studies in Sweden. The purpose of the course is to provide English language preparation in reading, writing, listening, and speaking corresponding to the Swedish upper secondary school course English 6, but also to provide students with an introduction to academic culture and communicative ability in English. The course consists of English language development with a focus on the academic language range, but students can also expect to learn and develop university academic skills like information literacy and research skills alongside language activities. These abilities are also developed and tested in the student’s individual preparation work. The course content includes and corresponds to, but is not limited to, the Swedish upper secondary school course Engelska 6.
The course consists of lectures, seminars and group activities in various fields of academic English and has been designed specifically to meet the needs of nonnative English speakers who wish to develop their English language competencies and be able to communicate effectively in an academic environment. In addition to the development of the four main areas of language (reading, writing, speaking and listening), there is also a strong focus on academic skills including research methods, research ethics, critical thinking, academic writing and oral presentations.
The horizontal aim is to develop and strengthen student skills for participating in higher education, life-long learning and global citizenship through group work, social engagement, peer learning, reflective learning and autonomous learning whilst developing agency, ability to reconcile tensions and dilemmas, intercultural communication skills, metacognitive skills, information literacy and critical thinking.
