MMTC Welcomes Visiting Scholar Tara Nair

Tara Nair will be visiting MMTC during May and June on the MMTC Visiting Scholar Fellowship Program

Tara received her M.Phil (Applied Economics) and Ph.D. (Economics) degrees from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, through the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. She is professor at the Gujarat Institute of Development Research (GIDR), Ahmedabad, a national level research institute supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, Government of India.

A development economist by training, Tara Nair has researched Indian newspaper industry, wherein she has critically examined the emergence and growth of the press with a comparative historical perspective and explored the regional ramifications. She has taught courses in India on media economics and the interactions among media, markets and civil society. Her current research interest is in unravelling the meanings associated with corporatization of media, a concept and phenomenon curiously caught between the rapidly transforming notions of media ethics, business morality and corporate governance. She is also interested in studying transnational inflows in Asian media markets.
