Belgian professor highlighted global perspectives in specialist dentistry
The CHILD researchers have had a visit from long-term collaboration partner Professor Luc Marks from Belgium. From a lifetime of experience, he shared a global perspective on specialist dental care for children and young people with a disability during a seminar.
Professor Luc Marks is a pediatric dentist and professor of specialist dentistry at Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. His main research interests are dentistry for people with disabilities and he is also an advisor to the Special Olympics Special Smiles program.
The collaboration with CHILD's researchers Malin Stensson and Johanna Norderyd goes back several years. Now they are also working together with Maria Björk in a project on oral health for young people with Down syndrome, where PhD student Elisabete Rebotim investigates whether young people with Down syndrome receive and are offered equivalent dental care compared to typically developed children. The collaboration also opens up more research studies that aim to prepare both children, parents and dental professionals for dental visits. Global perspectives enrich and teach us more about oral health for those who need support to get it.
