The Improvement Science Day was arranged on 29 February with focused on quality improvement, leadership, co-production and patient safety in health and welfare. The day was held at the School of Health and Welfare at Jönköping University and was organised by the Jönköping Academy for Improvement of Health and Welfare (JA).

The day was aimed at master students, PhD candidates and researchers in the field and included lectures, poster presentations and lots of discussions.

“The day is important but not least unique as a meeting place for master students, PhD candidates and researchers with an interest in quality improvement. We provide a lot of room for discussion, which is important for building relationships and strengthening JA as a centre, but not least to deepen and advance knowledge in the subject,” says Sofi Fristedt, Director of JA and one of the people responsible for the day.

Safety important during change

One of the speakers was Helen Bevan, Professor of Practice for Health and Social Care Service Improvement at Warwick Business School in the UK. She talked about the importance of building a sense of belonging during change. If you create a sense of belonging, you feel safe and involved in the change. Helen has also been involved in the master's programme Quality Improvement and Leadership in Health and Welfare at the School of Health and Welfare for several years, coaching students with their poster presentations.

“Every year I am amazed at what the students have learnt, their perspective and their wisdom. The learning process is amazing, when you step out of your comfort zone and make progress in your career," says Helen Bevan.

Gabriella Kalodimos and Martin Zetterlund were two students who presented their posters on quality improvement, and both were very pleased with the day. They both work in health care and have made a change in their respective workplaces during the programme.

"The journey in my work has been very important and that is what I take with me as experience, how to arouse the interest of the healthcare staff," says Martin.
