Media services and paper industry

Two research projects at JIBS have received a total of more than SEK 2 million from the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation.

Pernilla Rendahl, Assistant Professor in law, has been granted SEK 1 682 952 for her project "Value Added Tax on Media Services in the EU".  Within the project she will examine how services such as movies, music, TV and games should be taxed. These are services that, on account of technical progress, are easily distributed across borders. This raises questions on which country will tax the transaction, after which the rate, or whether it should be exempt from taxation. If different EU countries have different rules for VAT on media services, it may affect competition between operators as well as between countries.

Andreas Stephan , Professor of Economics, has been granted SEK 536 217 for his project ”Environmental Regulations Innovations and Productivity: Evidence from Swedish Firm”. The key objectives are to examine how changes in environmental standards, along with changes in global economic conditions confronting this market, have resulted in specific types of innovations, investments and changes in productivity, as well as mergers and acquisitions, in the Swedish pulp and paper industry since the 1980s.
