JU is building an AI lab at Science Park

Jönköping University (JU) has been conducting cutting-edge AI research for some time, but is now stepping up its efforts. A decision has been taken to establish a physical AI lab at Science Park, and work is already underway.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of several key focus areas at JU, and the university is now taking steps to strengthen its work in the field. To increase opportunities for disseminating knowledge about AI research and to improve opportunities for collaboration between researchers, both internally and externally, a physical AI research environment is to be established at Science Park in Jönköping.

The AI centre will create an inspiring environment that showcases the university’s AI research, whilst also serving as a functional workplace and testing environment for researchers in the field.

“This will be a resource for anyone who wants to understand, develop and collaborate on AI. We will showcase the latest developments whilst providing powerful computing capacity for researchers, students and organizations in the region,” says JU President Måns Svensson.

Hoping to open in a year’s time

Preparations for the facilities at Science Park are already underway. Within a year, work will begin on launching collaborative projects with industry and the public sector, as well as on securing external funding for, and raising awareness of, JU’s AI research.

“The lab premises and server capacity are being set up, and we are planning an opening ceremony in spring 2027,” says Måns Svensson.

The main target group for the initiative is JU’s staff and external collaborative partners, but students and members of the public who wish to find out more about the research being carried out at JU will also have the opportunity to visit the centre.

The interaction is one of the key aspects

“Here, people can develop and test their solutions on site. The interaction between research and innovation is one of the key aspects. Researchers will hopefully work side by side with start-ups, the manufacturing industry and the public sector,” says Måns Svensson.

Ann-Sofi Mikaelsson, an external consultant for the project management of the AI lab’s construction, is looking forward to the work and sees it as an interesting challenge.

“It’s an exciting project. We have a lot to do in a short space of time, and the aim is to create a real wow factor for JU,” she says.
